digital camera = best present to myself ever.

here are the pictures. I hope you like them, or something. I like taking them.

lucie is my dog.

a case study in canine insanity, august 2005.
all dogs are a little crazy, but my dog, she is a certified lunatic. this is how she behaves on a calm summer afternoon in the park.

sand and snow, november 2004.
lucie is in her element in the wintry wilds of new england. also, she lives with some cats.

harriman state park, 1 september 2004.
we took lucie out of the city for the day so she could commune with nature and her fellow wild animals. she had such a great time that she slept for approximately thirty-six hours afterwards.

massachusetts weekend, 19 - 20 june 2004.
I went to boston for father's day weekend. on saturday, we took lucie to a benefit walk for the animal rescue society of boston, where she played with other dogs and got to show off her agility chops. on sunday, we went to the blue hills indian reservation and let lucie run wild.

cities are my playground.

independence night, 4 july 2005.
fireworks over the red hook rooftops.

fall in prospect park, 6 november 2004, brooklyn.
on the first autumn weekend that I didn't have a rugby game, we spent a sunny saturday walking around the park, looking at the leaves, and being in touch with nature in the self-conscious way that city kids do.

howl! festival, 22 august 2004, manhattan.
art, politics, and public displays of excess in thompson square park. it's named after a poem by alan ginsberg, and I couldn't help but hear its lines in my head as I walked around.

they might be giants in prospect park, 30 july 2004, brooklyn.
the free concert at the prospect park bandshell, all after dark, with an audience of geeks and several thousand toddlers. the giants love to play for their hometown crowd, and it shows.

coney island mermaid parade, 26 june 2004, brooklyn.
just a lot of people on the boardwalk, dressed up like fish and other creatures from the sea. plus some swatties & me.

la tour eiffel, 5 april 2004, paris.
I had been in france for less than five hours before becoming completely entranced by the eiffel tower. I feel like such a tourist cliché, but it is seriously beautiful in an unusually raw and mechanical way.

cathédral notre-dame, 8 april 2004, paris.
I managed to visit the world's most famous catholic church on good friday, so the whole experience was accompanied by a lot of sonorous gregorian chanting. not that notre dame needs much help in the ambience department.

montmartre, 9 april 2004, paris.
possibly the only place in paris with an all-organic vegan restaurant. lots of hilly charm on a pale, lightwashed day.

cimitière du montparnasse, 11 april 2004, paris.
on easter sunday, I skipped the church and went to hang out with a bunch of dead people. there some celebrities, but the best and most bizarre gravestones belonged to people I'd never heard of.

museums & monuments, 5 - 10 april 2004, paris.
pictures from outside and underneath the musée du louvre, inside the amazing musée d'orsay, and around the parts of the île de la cité that are not covered by notre dame tourists.

the swirlygirl is me.

12-a-year 2005 and 12-a-year 2005 themes.
self-portraits for the livejournal community. in 2005, we submitted two photos every month. look at both sets to see how my hair changed from long to short!

star-forming nebula, 31 october 2004.
on the suggestion of one of my astronomy friends, I dressed up as a nebula for halloween. another astronomy friend, with whom I went to see the parade, said he might have even figured out what I was.

turquoise tutu, 9 may 2004.
for mother's day, I decided I would pretend to be a flower. the best I could do was to stick an old dance costume on my head and make some silly faces. these are the pictures I sent to my mom.
